Constructing a stair in concrete
can be complex. Precast stairs will need careful consideration
with respect to setting out and the order of construction, as
they undoubtedly need lifting in by crane. They are generally
of a bespoke design, and you should expect to see manufacturers
setting-out drawings before they start making the stair. You
will need to be clear about the floor finish as the thickness
needs to be taken account of in the stair design.
Making stairs in concrete has
a number of advantages. Their high mass makes them good for passive
energy strategies, and the solidity of a concrete stair gives
a very different feel in use, absorbing sound and vibration.
